Importance Of Self Care And Mental Health – Pamper Yourself

The importance of self-care and mental health should cross everyone’s mind from time to time but a lot of us leave it way in the back of the mind because life gets so busy that we forget to care of ourselves. This is especially true for mothers.

We’re so involved with taking care of our kids, cleaning the house, making supper, doing laundry, the list goes on. Mothers are amazing creatures who care more about taking care of everything else in life and let their own care and mental health go down the drain. It’s important, especially as a mom, to take care of ourselves.

Not only to be healthy because our kids need us, but to feel healthy and be able to take on all the daily tasks that we face. If you don’t take time to take care of yourself, at least once in a while, you’re going to be drained, you’re not going to feel good which is going to make you impatient and it’s much harder to do daily duties when you’re run down.

We’re women and women naturally like to be pampered but once we have kids it’s not about us anymore, our kids come first and at the end of the day we’re too tired to think of pampering ourselves. It’s important though, for so many reasons. You need to feel human even if you’re a mom so I’m here today to give you a few easy ideas about how you can start to make yourself feel human again.

You don’t have to do this every day but at least once a week if you can would be beneficial for you, your kids and everything that involves you.

Pamper Yourself – You’re Important Too

Take A Walk

This is the easiest one, unless you live in a cold climate of course. Taking a walk frees your mind, look around when you’re walking. Pay attention to the scenery, even if it’s just sidewalks and others front yards. Thinking and paying attention to other things will get your mind of the daily stresses and make you feel better.

When the sun is shining down on you, pay attention to how it warms your skin.(Don’t forget about the sunscreen though!) The sun does amazing things for your happiness too because the sun gives you vitamin D which raises your dopamine and serotonin levels. Dopamine and serotonin are neurotransmitters. When they’re released they help regulate your mood and make you happier. That’s why a lot of people have the “winter blues”, because of a lack of vitamin D also called the “sunshine vitamin”.

If you’ve got a young baby or younger child you can also strap them into the stroller and go for a walk. It’ll do both of you some good and the putting will refresh you both, even if baby is napping.

As I said before, if you live in a cold climate it makes it harder, I understand that. As I type this there a 10-foot snowbanks in my front yard so I totally get not being able or wanting to go out for a walk which is why I will follow with some more great ideas to pamper yourself.

Go For Coffee With A Friend

This one is pretty simple too. You can go to the coffee shop, sit at the park or even just sit in the vehicle and chit chat. Whatever you prefer to do. Of course if you don’t like coffee then drink the beverage of your choice but the point is just to get out and socialize. Get your mind away from everything.

If you need to vent, then vent! Get it off your chest! That’s what great friends are for, but don’t forget to let it go after. Let it out and let it fly away like a bird and then forget it. Have some laughs and refresh your “batteries” for tomorrow. 9 times out of 10 you’ll feel much better after going out with a friend.

You can also incorporate the first idea of taking a walk with this one too. Take a walk along the lake or beach while sipping coffee with your friends. Maybe put your feet in the water. Do whatever feels good for you.

Relax At The Spa

Going to the spa is one of the most relaxing things you can do since it is exactly for relaxing.

Spas are great because there’s a variety of things you can do so for example, if you’re not into massages there’s still other things you can do. Not everyone is comfortable with strangers touching their body so I totally understand this.

You could always get a pedicure, manicure, facial or go for the anything else they have. If you’re interested, check with your local spa to see what they have to offer.

This is one of my favorite things to do to relax and wind down but it is pricey so it might be something you want to do too often. I’ve come up with another idea to replace going to the spa so that we’re not breaking the bank on weekly spa visits and that idea is coming up now!

Spa Night At Home

Staying home and pampering yourself can be just as good as going to the spa. Yes, you have to do the pampering yourself but it still makes you feel so good after.

After the kids are in bed is you time. Take advantage of this time to pamper yourself to the max!

Take a nice bubble bath if that’s your thing, I personally don’t like baths so I take a shower. Shave your legs, use products that make you smell good and feel pretty.

After your bath you can paint your nails, do a face mask, put on some body lotion, anything you want to do to make you feel good. (Stay tuned, I’ll be making a list of my favorite products very soon!)

If you have an older child who’d like to join you and you feel up to letting them join that’s fine too. You don’t have to let them join in on your you time all every time but once in a while is great because kids need to unwind too and what better way than to unwind with mom and make some great memories?!

Last Words

Self-care and mental health are both very important for each and every person in the world but once you’re a mom it becomes even more important because you have those little ones to take care of and if we’re not feeling like ourselves, how are we supposed to give them them our best without feeling our best? We can’t and they don’t deserve that, neither do you so pamper yourself! Love yourself to the fullest so you can be your ultimate self for everything that’s thrown at you.

Keep being the amazing creature that you are mom, you do so much! You carry the weight of the world on your back so give yourself a break and get back to feeling great. Just because we’re moms doesn’t mean we need to give up who we are, we just have to learn to incorporate it into being a mom and darn good ones at that!

All the best, mamas!

  1. Hey Melissa,

I’m not a mum myself, but I have friends that are and I’m always in awe of the selflessness it takes to be a parent- it’s like a superpower! I think it’s so great therefore that you highlight self care.

Even for those of us that aren’t parents this is great to read, as I think we all have stresses in our lives and it’s easy to be rushing from thing to thing and not take time for ourselves. I really like all your ideas here, I’ve recently started the spa night at home idea and I find it so therapeutic! Going for coffee is also great as we all need to vent and laugh sometimes! Thanks for the suggestions here and all the best on your parenting journey 🙂

    • Hi Natalie,
Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it. I think once you’re a mom, self-care takes the back burner because taking care of our children is most important but it’s important for us to remember to take care of ourselves in order to be able to take care of our kids to our full potential.
I’m glad you mentioned that it was a good post even if you’re not a parent. I was hoping this article could reach anyone who needs the reminder.
I’m pleased that you like the ideas too, I tried to touch a wide variety of things we could do to feel more “human” again. Thanks for stopping by ☺️

  2. As a stay at home mom, I sometimes forget about myself. This was so helpful for me. Now, I know I have to take care of me too! Thank you so much for all that. I will keep them in mind.

    • Hi,
I think we all forget about ourselves and it’s important not to, that’s why I’ve made this post ☺️
I’m glad you found it helpful. You’re very welcome and thank you for your comment.

  3. Thank you for this timely reminder. We so often overlook our needs once we become mothers. Although I am now onto Grandchildren it is still as vital for me to create that balance and pamper myself when they are around, as it is so much more draining after.

Pampering yourself is something that we tend to let go by the by once we have had children and I for one, have found that although they have left the nest, I am a lot busier now that I was when they were home.

Being a country girl, I returned to bushland for my rest and relaxation, and even installed an old cast iron bath ‘outdoors’ for my pamper time, I know you prefer a shower, but for me, lying back staring out at the valley is so serene.

Enjoy your pamper time, you deserve it.

    • Hi Jo,
You’re very welcome ☺️ we do definitely forget about ourselves once we have kids. I had forgotten about what pampering even was for years after I had my first daughter! I’m glad I was able to reconnect with that part of myself and share this for others to get the reminder.

Oh boy, how I would love to be in the country! If I were set up like you are I’d definitely love being in the bath! I envy you lol I’m so glad you’ve got a great spot to unwind as it is very important.

Thank you for visiting my site and for you comment, also!
